Science

 

Science is taught weekly and is often incorporated in year group topics where appropriate. Science is planned in line with the National Curriculum and we try to give children regular opportunities to investigate and develop scientific enquiry skills.

These include: observing, questioning, hypothesising and predicting and testing. The children’s enthusiasm for this subject is developed through our emphasis upon practical experience with a wide range of materials.

By developing their knowledge and understanding of the world, we aim to help each child to develop an enquiring mind and adopt a scientific approach to their work by giving them a wide range of experiences that encourage them to observe, question and make predictions.

In Reception children begin to develop their Science knowledge and skills and 'Understanding of the World' through the topics 'All About Me' (Ourselves, body parts, similarities and differences), Toys (materials toys are made from, how they move; pulling, pushing, twisting) 'Food Glorious Food' (naming and tasting fruit and vegetables, observing decay, finding out where food comes from) and Paws, Claws, Feathers and Fins (naming common animals and their young, patterns and change, life cycle of a butterfly)

In Year 1 children learn through the topics 'Animals, including Humans' (parts of the body/the senses), 'Everyday Materials' (describe and compare simple properties) Plants (wild and garden plants, deciduous and evergreen trees) and Seasonal Change. 

In Year 2 children learn through the topics 'Animals, including Humans' (Life cycles, growth, keeping healthy), Plants (bulbs and seeds, conditions for growth) 'Everyday Materials' and 'Habitats'.
